Our Background

Maria Del Mar Malo MBCAP MNCPS (Acc)

Level 4 Diploma Integrative Counselling

I see therapy as a collaborative and holistic process – something we build together in a way that feels supportive, empowering, and uniquely right for you. I know from both personal and professional experience how important it is to find a counsellor who feels like the right fit. Feeling safe, understood, and comfortable enough to be yourself can make all the difference in therapy, and I aim to offer a space where you can explore whatever is happening in your life without judgement or pressure.

I’m an Integrative Counsellor and a registered member of both the BACP and NCPS, and my work is grounded in their ethical frameworks. This means you can expect a safe, confidential, professional and ethically sound space where your wellbeing is always prioritised.

Alongside my professional training, I bring lived experience to my work. I grew up in an unsafe environment, and therapy played a vital role in helping me make sense of this, heal, and move forward. Experiencing the impact of supportive, attuned therapeutic relationships first hand has shaped my belief in the power of counselling and deepened my understanding of how vulnerable it can feel to reach out for help. Over the years, both through my own journey and through the support I’ve offered to others in daily life, I found myself naturally drawn towards listening, holding space, and offering care - which ultimately led me to train as a counsellor and want to offer that same support to others.

I support adults from many different backgrounds, identities, cultures and belief systems. I have experience working with people in alternative lifestyles and within the creative industries. My background includes growing up in an immigrant family, spending time living overseas, and experiencing loss, all of which inform the empathy, curiosity, and sensitivity I bring to my practice. Before becoming a counsellor, I also worked in the creative fields and charitable mental health sector, which further deepened my awareness of the challenges people carry, often quietly.

As an Integrative therapist, I draw from different therapeutic approaches and take a holistic view of your experiences, adapting my work as our relationship and your needs unfold. I believe therapy is most healing when it honours who you are, your lived experience, and the world you come from.

Who I work With

I work with adults aged 18 and over, and welcome people from many walks of life. Some of the areas I can support you with include:

  • Different types of Grief and Loss, including bereavement and pet loss, and losses connected to relationships, work, health, or ways of life.

  • Anxiety, stress, depression, overwhelm, and navigating life changes.

  • Trauma, using a trauma-informed lens.

  • The emotional weight of caring for others (e.g. family, friends etc), including supporting someone with dementia.

  • Chronic pain, illness, new diagnoses, and the complex emotions they bring.

  • Neurodivergence, later-life diagnoses, and feeling ‘different’.

  • LGBTQIA+ identity and relationship exploration.

  • Cultural, spiritual, and cross-cultural experiences.

  • Alternative lifestyles, and relationships, and the unique pressures faced by artists, entertainers and creatives.

I also understand the complexities of living or working abroad and am always happy to support those navigating transitions between cultures or countries. Please note that due to insurance and legal restrictions, I’m unable to work with clients permanently living in certain countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and some others (please enquire).

If you feel curious about whether counselling with me could be supportive, I’d welcome hearing from you through a Free 20-30 minutes Zoom Consultation.
